The largest volcano in America

A recent study estimated the volume of molten rock under Yellowstone in the northwest US to be two and a half times more than previously estimated.

Not a purely scientific term, these are usually volcanoes that formed in a depression in the earth, which is called a caldera.

Another difference between a supervolcano and an ordinary volcano is that when an ordinary volcano erupts, lava gradually accumulates in the mountain, and only then does it begin to appear.

In a supervolcano, magma, approaching the surface, is collected in a huge underground reservoir. The nearby rock melts and becomes thicker as the pressure continues to build.
