A UNIFIL member was injured by a bullet of unknown origin in the south, and was transferred to the hospital for treatment.........................*

UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti said that shortly after midnight last night, peacekeepers at a UNIFIL position near Al-Qozah reported hearing gunfire nearby.

He added: "One of the peacekeepers was hit by a bullet and underwent surgery. He is now recovering and his condition is stable."

Tenenti noted, "The source of the shooting is currently unknown, and we have opened an investigation."

He continued: "Any targeting near UNIFIL sites, and any use of our sites to launch attacks across the Blue Line, for any reason, is unacceptable."

The UNIFIL spokesman reminded the parties "of their obligations to protect peacekeepers and to avoid endangering the men and women working to restore stability."

He continued: "Attacks against civilians or United Nations personnel are violations of international law that may amount to war crimes."

Tenenti concluded: “We continue to urge all parties concerned to cease fire to ensure the safety of not only peacekeepers, but all people living near the Blue Line.”
